Gladiatori, Atleti e attori: Le Celebrità dell’Antica Roma

Preparatevi a salire su una macchina del tempo che vi porterà a rivivere un giorno di festa nell’antica età imperiale.

The merenda is the new aperitif

Every time you think of Italians, you imagine them sitting at the table eating a mountain of pasta all day long.

Although this can absolutely happen on Sunday, the day of the big lunch with the whole family of about 4 hours and 7 courses, during the week we prefer to eat smaller portions several times a day.

The result? It’s always time to eat!

Among the meals of the day, the “merenda” (snack) is definitely one of the most Italians! Around 4 p.m. in the afternoon, at home or at the bar, we drink a coffee, a juice or a nice cup of tea, accompanied by sweets, for sugar lovers, or something salty (in Rome often wins the pizza with mortadella!).

In last weeks the “merenda” is coming back in fashion!

In fact between government decrees and restrictions because of Covid-19, many bars have to end the table service at 6 p.m., making it very complicated to organize another typical Italian meal: the aperitif!

Without spritz available, the “merenda” is the social moment par excellence, a break from the day’s work to share with your friends.

Vivi Bistrot: for a bohemian tea

The Vivi Bistrot is a cafeteria-tea room in the heart of the historic center of Rome. The restaurant is located directly on the short side of Piazza Navona near the Brazilian Embassy.

If you arrive early, you can win the best tables and enjoy an enchanted view of the magnificent square.

But also inside the beauty is hidden! In the tea room it feels like going back in time, soft lights and atmospheres reminiscent of typical bohemian cafes.

Babington’s Tea Room: the oldest tea room

Simply the oldest and most famous tea room in Rome. Furnished in complete late nineteenth century style, it is the tea room par excellence in Rome. 

Babington’s was born in 1893 thanks to 2 English sisters. The two young girls were great tea avant-garde! In fact, before the opening of this place, tea was sold only in pharmacies.

Here you can taste the real British tea obtained from whole leaves. A showcase of English culture.

The cost is definitely not low, also because you are just one step away from the beautiful Spanish Steps. So given the place and the undisputed quality of the tea, it is worth trying it at least once in your life!

Fabrica

If you are wondering the origin of its name, you should know that before this beautiful tea room the place was a factory! Specifically, a carpentry shop.

A few minutes walk from St. Peter’s, the Fabrica tea room is the ideal place to spend an afternoon in peace and relaxation, enjoying a great selection of teas and infusions. Even the desserts are really amazing, infact this magical place was born as a pastry shop. And already at the entrance the scent could bewitch you! 

The atmosphere in this tea room is relaxing: on the walls you can admire many works of art by local artists, with bright colors and modern style. And if you like some of them…you can buy them!

The roman Ottobrata

“What a magnificent ottobrata!”

Unless you are Roman, perhaps you have never heard this expression.

Rome fascinates its visitors all year round: in winter, when the grey clouds are reflected in the dark waters of the Tiber, but also in the middle of summer, when the majestic monuments shimmer under the light of a fiery sun. 

But there is a particular month, in which the Capital lives a warm autumn, in which all nature seems to launch a last gasp, before dozing off for the long winter: October.

This month represents for Rome the last moment of summer, so much so that it is not rare that the Romans head towards Ostia, for a last day on the beach. 

How is this possible? It is a typical phenomenon of the Capital that takes the name of the Roman Ottobrata.

Roman Ottobrata: a meteorological miracle

This anomalous climate, which in October affects Rome, is a gift from the anticyclone of the Azores. In this period, in fact, an imposing mass of hot air arrives on our peninsula, particularly affecting central Italy. 

Rome, therefore, still tastes a little bit of summer even in the middle of autumn. The anticyclone, in fact, ensures an extremely mild climate and total absence of rain, allowing the Romans, since ancient times, to enjoy the last trips, called “scampagnate“, before the arrival of cold winter temperatures.

Meaning and origins of the Roman Ottobrata

The Ottobrata means for the Romans the characteristic trip out of town, with friends and relatives, in October.

The origin of the Octobrata of Rome has its roots in a very distant past, as it dates back to Ancient Roman times. 

The Romans usually organized the Baccanalia, parties where wine and good food could not miss. They were extravagant parties, where everything was allowed.

The Romans themselves decided then to make them forbidden, because they were uncontrollable!

A feast for all Romans

The Roman Ottobrata began to be celebrated again during the nineteenth century as an activity related to the harvest period and the Romans left the city to reach the vineyards that were beyond the gates of the Capital.

At that time there were no cars, so they left from the”rioni”, the neighborhoods, aboard the characteristic “carettelle“, curious carriages in the shape of eggshells, pulled by two horses decorated festively. 

It must have been really funny to watch that unusual procession that left behind him Roman stornelli, laughing and mocking! 

This traditional custom united people and nobility who often ended up celebrating together, sharing food and wine: for the aristocrats it was a unique opportunity to escape from the palace routine and for the people it represented a unique opportunity to escape from an often grey and tiring daily life.

No one abstained from the Ottobrata, but, above all, no one gave up showing off their best clothes. 

And no expense was spared! It is said that in those days, the Monte dei Pegni did business in gold: the Romans, in order to be able to afford a dress worthy of the feast, were willing to commit even those few possessions they possessed!

Wine, food, and goliardia: and it’s immediately taken away!

For the poorest people, who could not afford the typical “trip out of town”, the Borghese family took care of them: during the Sundays of October, in fact, they opened their villa, the famous Villa Borghese, setting up the meadows with rides, shows, equestrian performances and athletic competitions.

But no matter where you went, the atmosphere was the same everywhere: dancing, singing and wine, lots of wine. 

In short, the Roman Octobrata was a real feast of the senses and sociality: a tradition that comes from afar, but still lives in the habits of the Romans.

The hot Sundays of October convince even the most “slippers”, i.e. the lazy, to leave home, so the city of Rome organizes various events and manifestations for everyone.

8 of the best Italy travel tips

1: Be prepared for public transport.

Or, if you’re driving, get ready for the Italian traffic. Each city in Italy has its own public transport system that usually includes buses, trams or metro. It’s a good idea to read a little about how to get around the city you’re visiting if you want to depend on more than your two feet. Doing some research can also save money as many cities offer a day pass. As for the train system, it connects all the major cities and several smaller ones. 

Also, even if you do not have a car, do not be afraid. In many Italian cities there are now car sharing services. You won’t even have to think about paying for parking!

If you love cycling, in Rome there are many bike paths that you can find. Cycling among the colors of autumn is magical and green. 

2: Have reasonable expectations for where you can go and what you can see.

By keeping your travel itinerary within reasonable bounds and leaving free afternoons to wander at will, you’ll find that you can prevent yourself from becoming an overwhelmed tourist. I know, there are just too many places to visit in Italy and too many interesting sites, museums, shops, and restaurants in each of these cities. But before you go, siphon off the most interesting places onto your must-see list, and in the spaces between allow yourself the luxury of discovering Italy as it comes.

Simply getting lost in the streets of the city you can find treasures and magnificent secret corners.

3: Get off the tourist trail!

It isn’t only Florence, Rome, and Venice. Small towns throughout every region are lovely places, and a visit to them is a sure way to see what Italy is really like. Slip into any town’s main square at about 5 pm and watch the locals as they enjoy their daily passeggiata.

Go where the locals go! In this way you can totally immerse yourself in the local culture.An example? Visit the oldest district of Rome, enjoying the best of street food in our company!

4: Know busy times from slow times.

Avoiding the metro at rush hour and the Colosseum on Sunday mornings is a key way to making your trip to Italy more enjoyable and less stressful! Also good to know whether the restaurant you’ve been dying to try requires reservations. Restaurants are busiest between 1 pm and 2 pm for lunch and the busiest hour for dinner is 9 pm.

5: Learn a little about Italian regions.

The regional differences between Lazio and Campania are a joy to explore and can add depth to your trip to Italy. The best way to discover a region is to stay in an agriturismo, which is most often in the countryside. Agriturismo usually also offers regional fare produced on-site, and the owners are often happy to talk about where they live and why it is the best region in Italy.

6: Pack appropriately.

The last thing you want to do is to lug a heavy suitcase up a hundred stairs in Amalfi or over the jittering cobblestones of every Italian city. Always pack less than what you think you need, as you will probably do some shopping while you’re here! Also, watch the weather. Though the temperature remains steadily hot in summer and cool in winter, be prepared for flux if you’re coming in autumn or spring. And do know that it does get cold—shorts are impossible during winter!

7: Shop at the markets.

8: Pick up some Italian.

Many Italians in the large more touristy cities speak English, but a sure way to win an Italian’s favour is by speaking a few choice words in their language. Italian is a language of nuance and flourish, traits that are appreciated when foreigners try their hands at them. If you know a little French, Spanish, or Portuguese (or even better, Ancien Latin!) then you won’t have much trouble at all. A good trick is to listen to the pronunciations of the Italians around you and try to mimic it. Extra points are awarded for correct gesticulations!

A boutique… of wonders

Today during our digital journey we want to tell you the story of one of our most…alcoholic partner!

In the heart of Rome, along Via del Governo Vecchio, there is a small boutique of wonders: the Boutique del Limoncello. But do not be fooled by the name: you will not only find the most famous Italian liqueur in the world, but many typical products of the region of origin of the owner, Calabria.

But let’s proceed with order: once upon a time ….

Once upon a time, in Scalea…

Once upon a time there was Natalino and his family, the Passaro. In the beautiful Scalea they had a small restaurant, for which Natalino began for fun to produce homemade limoncello, to be served to their guests at the end of the meal.

You know, somethimes passions born like a game, and Natalino’s passion soon turned into a real job. In 1995 he decided to open the business, always in Scalea, and to start bottling and selling his limoncello.

Francesca, his daughter, still remembers the discussions around the restaurant table between her father and friends to decide the name of their liquor. In the end they decided: Fior di limoncello.

A dream come true: Francesca’s boutique

But their story does not stop there: do you remember their daughter Francesca?

Well, between the tables of the restaurant first and in the company then, she grew up in the family business, learning the secrets of the job. Her ambition and passion gave her the courage to undertake another challenge: to open her own store.

The dream came true on January 15, 2017 when she finally opened her own Boutique! 

Getting the store was not easy at all! Francesca fallen in love with a very specific street, a few steps from the romantic Piazza Navona. 

Via del Governo Vecchio welcomed her full of lights, movement (the so-called “movida”), with its small stores and its music, a mixture of many different languages. It could not be otherwise: or that street…or that street.

The name best encapsulates the soul of this place: Boutique. The design is studied in detail, the perfumes envelop you at the first step, but above all, like any self-respecting boutique, you have to enter to discover its treasures. 

Not only limoncello…

If the limoncello appears as the superstar of the store, in reality the experience you will live inside it is really multisensory, and you will be teleported to the magical region of Calabria. Liqueurs, grappas, alcoholic creams, but also beer, cedrate, sodas… and just talking about drinks, all contained in bottles always different.

Looking around, you will understand that there is a lot to taste! Jams, creams, cookies, chocolates, chips, dried tomatoes in oil… in short, from breakfast to after dinner has everything you need.

Francesca’s love for her region is captured not only in the care of the store, but also in the choice of the products themselves. In addition to selling the products of the small family business, she loves to go and visit the other companies of her territory, supporting the family realities, true “treasurer” of ancient and typical flavors. He loves to research the products of his childhood, and as he always tells us “bring to Rome what only in Calabria you could find“. 

Among the particular liqueurs you will find: myrtle, strawberry, cedar, bergamot, the bitter of Pollino. 

But our eyes have fallen on two products that he recently put on sale.

The first is a honey grappa: lovers of grappa is a bottle that can not miss in your collection! A taste sweet and dry at the same time, which could bewitch you.

The second is licorice: this bitter is the most complicated to produce, because its processing is long and very expensive. And if you fall in love with it, in the store you can also find everything you need to…produce it! In fact Francesca also has liquorice powder, with the recipe to prepare it on the label.

Street Food: To lick your fingers!!

Today we want to take you around the streets of Rome to discover our traditions related to Street Food.

Street Food was born centuries ago: the ancient Greeks and Romans already served it in their Thermopolii, that are stands mounted on the street. Their “main dish”?  The soup, and in different “tastes”: soups of broad beans, spelt and chickling peas, with seasonal variations.

Street Food is a cuisine born mainly for the poorest people, but many recipes of which over time have been taken up in the best noble and aristocratic tables, served as a refined and exclusive food because of its originality.

 Here are 3 recipes not to be missed in Rome, and that you can taste during our experiences!

His Majesty the supplì!

Not only the favorite of the Romans, but the food that probably represents the essence of the Roman itself. The supplì is a very simple and tasty recipe: a handful of rice with ragù sauce that hides the sweetest of surprises, a heart of mozzarella. All fried!

It is no coincidence that the name means “surprise”: the name was given to it by some French soldiers in Rome at the beginning of the nineteenth century who called this meatball “surprise”, because only by opening it you could find out what was inside.

The secret to understand if the supplì is high quality? When you open it, the mozzarella must “filare” (“spin”), so create a “thread”; if this happens, you are eating a perfect “supplì al telefono” (“supplì at the phone”).

Fry the flowers: the pumpkin flower

Do not be fooled by the name, it is not a typical food for the Halloween party nor does it contain traces of pumpkin.

The Pumpkin flower is a simple recipe of peasant origin, where nothing was ever thrown away. The main ingredient is the zucchini flower, with its beautiful yellow-orange color, with anchovies and mozzarella, all fried. The secret of its fragrance lies in the batter, which must be nice and thick, so that when fried it becomes crispy and light. 

The best flowers can be enjoyed in the period between spring and summer.

The Roman-Judaic fried fish: The cod fillet

The cod fillet is a recipe that encapsulates the union between the Jewish and Roman culinary tradition. If you love fish, this is definitely the street food for you. 

Enclosed in a crunchy batter is a heart of  cod, which is salted cod and then dried in the sun.

Romans usually eat it during the Christmas period, especially on the evening of Christmas Eve. But we recommend not to give it up and enjoy it absolutely all year round!

The 3 historic cafes in the center of Rome

Today with our digital journey we want to take you to the discovery of the 3 historic cafes in the center of Rome. 

These are places where the intense aroma of coffee blends with history, telling us incredible anecdotes about the city’s past and who, passing through the Capital, was fascinated by it.

Are you ready to get lost in a cup of coffee?

Bar Rosati

Since 1922, the bar Rosati is historic not only because it is almost a century old, but also because it has seen so many facts between its cups and its Art Nouveau furniture. In fact, the Rosati is a real artistic and literary café, a meeting place for painters, artists, filmmakers, actors and politicians.

The ’30s were a golden age, just as in the post-war period it was easy to spot among its rooms famous names of our literature such as Alberto Moravia and his wife Elsa Morante. In the ’60s, then, Fellini often came here, as did Pasolini and Italo Calvino.

The bar Rosati in Piazza del Popolo was a place of debate, of comparison, of great speeches on art. It seems that the scripts of many cult movies of our cinema were written on these tables!

If the interior has an ancient atmosphere, the tables offer a view of the magnificent square, which has the oldest obelisk in Rome in the middle!

Caffè Atelier Museum Canova Tadolini

A Café Atelier? Yes! Entering the Caffè Atelier Museum Canova Tadolini means immersing yourself in art and history, and drinking a coffee is a unique experience.

Inside you will be surrounded by busts, sculptures, preparatory models, marble and bronze groups, some of them even huge. All according to the original…disorder!

In fact the place was the studio of the sculptor Antonio Canova. In 1818 the master then renewed the rent for his best student, Adamo Tadolini, and until 1967 generations of artists from the Tadolini family followed one another in the studio. Today, in this unique and fascinating historical place, there are works by all of them: Canova, Tadolini, Scipione, Giulio, Enrico.

The rooms are one more beautiful than the other and all different!

Antico Caffè Greco

The oldest historic café in Rome and the second in Italy: only the Florian in Venice is “older” than 40 years! The Antico Caffè Greco was opened in 1760 by Nicola della Maddalena, called the “Greco” for its origins, and took its name from his nickname.

Among its rooms have met intellectuals, artists, politicians, painters, historians. In the period of the Grand Tour it was the reference point for foreigners visiting Rome.

A curiosity: at the Antico Caffè Greco foreigners could have their mail delivered, and there was a little box dedicated to this purpose.

The list of famous personalities who have followed one another over the decades is endless. We mention only a few: the philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer, Buffalo Bill, Canova, Casanova, D’annunzio, De Chirico, Orson Welles, Wagner, Mark Twain, Toro Seduto (!!), Stendhal, Nietzsche, Pasolini, Andrea Pazienza, Cardinal Gioacchino Pecci who became Pope Leo XIII, Renato Guttuso, Leopardi, Ludovico II of Bavaria. In short, many different brains, each of which in its own field has made history.

Another curiosity: the Caffè Greco is the largest private art gallery open to the public in the world. In fact, in the maze of its rooms there are 300 works on display. And still today, somewhere in the café, you can find the painter Stellario Baccellieri seated somewhere intent on painting and interpreting the coffee according to his very personal vision.
